Orange Bowl

When: Jan. 1, 2020

Where: Hard Rock Stadium; Miami Gardens, Fla.

Projected matchup: Notre Dame vs. Florida

Quick bite: Did Wake Forest squander an opportunity at playing in Miami for New Year’s with Saturday’s faceplant at Clemson? The loss wasn’t a surprise, but the 49-point beatdown really weakened the Demon Deacons’ shot to play in the New Year’s Six. Notre Dame is in the mix if the Irish finish 10-2 and the Virgina-Virginia Tech victory has a shot too if the winner goes to the ACC Championship Game and has a respectable showing. Notre Dame is eligible for any ACC bowl tie-in as long as the Irish are within one game of the team eligible for the slot.

Rose Bowl

When: Jan. 1, 2020

Where: Pasadena, Calif.

Projected matchup: Minnesota vs. Utah

Quick bite: The Gophers’ first loss of the season this weekend coming at Iowa officially puts a dampen on an otherwise splendid season for P.J. Fleck and Co. Minnesota was hoping its first loss, if there was one, would could vs. Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game, but looks like that could be loss No. 2. We’re projecting the Pac-12’s runner-up in this spot unless Oregon is held out of the final four. If that’s the case, Utah goes elsewhere and the Ducks go to Pasedena.

Sugar Bowl

When: Jan. 1, 2020

Where: Mercedes-Benz Superdome; New Orleans, La.

Projected matchup: Alabama vs. Oklahoma

Quick bite: We’re going to get the matchup everybody wanted to see, Alabama vs. Jalen Hurts, but it’s not coming in the Playoff, nor will Tua Tagovailoa play. His serious hip injury suffered vs. Mississippi State has effectively ended his season and most likely his collegiate career with the Crimson Tide. The Sugar Bowl potentially will have a national semifinal feel pitting two one-loss Top 10 teams if LSU, Ohio State and Clemson all win out and the selection committee chooses the Pac-12 champion over these to with the No. 4 seed.

Cotton Bowl

When: Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019

Where: AT&T Stadium; Arlington, Texas

Projected matchup: Memphis vs. Georgia

Quick bite: Could Georgia fall to this game? Chances are if the Bulldogs lost to LSU in the SEC Championship Game, they’ll be ranked behind Alabama in the final Playoff standings, which sends the Crimson Tide to the Sugar Bowl. Georgia would be relegated to Arlington face the Group of 5’s champion, which is still very much in the air.
